The article will provide details of both, the Student visa and the post-graduation work permit.

Student Visa
If you wish to study in Canada and your study tenure is more than 6 months, you will need to have a study permit issued along with along with your travel visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTa). The student visa allows you to study in Canada for a fixed period of time. International students get to study at any institution in Canada as long as it falls under the category of a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
A DLI is an institution which is approved either by the provincial or territorial government for providing educational services to International students. In order to apply for a study permit, you need a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution. It must be made sure that you do not apply to those Universities that are not DLIs since, even if they provide acceptance, you will not be able to secure an entry into Canada based on their acceptance offer. In order to know the various DLIs in Canadian provinces, you can visit the official Canada immigration webpage for DLIs.
In order to be eligible throughout the tenure of your study for a study permit, and to avoid any issue with the immigration authorities, you need to ensure the following;
·         Always study in a DLI throughout your study tenure.
·         Maintain your academic progress throughout your course.
·         Leave the country after your study permit reaches expiry or get the work visa extension
·         Meet all the Canada Study Visa Requirements
The study permit definitely helps you plan your future in Canada if you are interested in a Canadian Citizenship/ Permanent Residence.

Work Permit
If you have received a degree from a designated learning institution that makes you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) and your study tenure is more than 8 months, then you can work in Canada after you get your degree. You must also have met the terms of your Student Visa Requirements throughout your study tenure. The PGWP allows you to gain meaningful work experience in Canada in your desired domain of study.

The rules for the tenure of your work permit are as follows:

  •  If your program tenure is more than 8 months and less than 2 years, then your work permit will be valid for the same tenure as your study duration. Eg: 1 year of study entitles you to 1 year of PGWP.
  • If your program tenure is more than 2 years, then you will be eligible for up to 3-year work permit.
  • If you have already availed a PGWP after your previous degree, you won’t be eligible further for a new PGWP.

Latest updates to Post-Study Work Visa New Zealand

The Government of New Zealand has always welcomed international students with open arms. Its immigration and visa laws are designed to ensure that International students are entitled to a lot of benefits. The Government has introduced changes to the post-study work visa in August 2018 to generate educational, economic, social and cultural benefits for New Zealand via its international students.

The latest update to the post-study work visa rules have been made to benefit the international students who come with a valid New Zealand Student Visa. This article throws light on New Zealand’s Post-study work visa taking into account the amendments introduced.

Essential conditions

In order to be eligible for a post-study work visa, you must have studied in New Zealand for a level 4 or higher qualification according to the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.

PSW Visa Duration

1.     For studying in Auckland for Level 4 - 6 and non-degree Level 7 qualifications, one-year PSW Visa is granted.
2.     Outside Auckland, if the study is completed by December 2021, a 2-year post-study work visa is granted for students studying Level 4 - 6 and non-degree Level 7 qualifications.
3.     However, after December 2021, the length of the post-study visa will be 1 year for those studying outside Auckland as well.

For Family Members

If international students are studying Level 8 qualifications and fall in the area specified on the Long Term Skills Shortage list, their partner may also apply for a work visa and the dependent children are entitled to study fee-free as domestic students. However for students studying Level 9 and above courses (Masters/Phd.) there is no restriction for the course to be under the Long Term Skills Shortage list for the spouses to be able to work full time apart from their dependent children getting free education till high school as well.
