Here's How to Apply for New Zealand Student Visa!

 

New Zealand is known for its picturesque landscape, excellent quality of education, high standard of living and top-class educational institutions and is the country that offers Indian students an opportunity to study there.
For pursuing higher education in New Zealand, students are required to obtain a New Zealand Student Visa.  There are four types of visas offered by New Zealand to pursue education. Let us know about those:

  • Fee Paying Student Visa:

This type of student visa is applicable for the students willing to study full-time for up to four years.

  • Exchange Student Visa: 

This type of visa is for the students willing to study a full-time program for up to four years for an approved student exchange program.

  • Foreign Government Supported Student Visa: 

This type of visa is for the students willing to study full-time for up to four years on a foreign government loan or scholarship.
All the above-mentioned visas are applicable for students over 18 years of age.

An Indian student willing to study in New Zealand will be most probably applicable for a Fee-Paying Student Visa. To apply for the same, applicants are required to fulfil the New Zealand student visa requirements. They are as follows.

Documents required to obtain a New Zealand Visa: 

All the mentioned documents are required to obtain a Fee-Paying Student Visa.

  • Applicant’s valid passport
  • Letter of acceptance at the New Zealand University. The letter should mention the duration of the program, tuition fee, and the course should be approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
  • A written guarantee from an applicant or the university that suitable accommodation is available for the applicant in New Zealand.
  • An evidence to buy a return ticket after the completion of the course.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover the living expenses during the stay in New Zealand which will be NZ$ 15,000 for a year.
  • Academic documents like transcripts, diplomas, degrees or certificates.
  • Student visa application forms
  • Visa application fee
  • Passport-sized photographs

The process to apply for a New Zealand Student Visa:

Applicants must apply for a New Zealand student visa online via the New Zealand Immigration website (https://cutt.ly/3bZlHTo ). A student from India is required to make the payment for applying for the visa.

  • Online Application: NZD 330 (approx. INR 16,500)
  • Paper-Based Application: USD $ 222 (approx. INR 15,300)

Applicants must apply at least 120 days prior to the intended date of the program. The application date is considered when the student pays the application fees.
 

English Language Requirements: 

It is a must to provide evidence of proficiency in the English Language to obtain a New Zealand Student Visa. For this, students need to appear for the IELTS examination and secure the required bands.

Terms and Conditions of New Zealand Visa for International Students

Passport:

As per the regulations, the passport must be valid for 3 months from the date of departure from New Zealand.

Work:

Most students often decide to work for part-time while pursuing studies parallelly and the best part is that the international students can avail 20 hours a week of work time. 
The students eligible for this are the ones who have opted for 2 years program. To undertake full-time work during studies, first, the course should be of at least one year and worth more than 120 credits. Full-time work can be done only during holidays.
A master by research and PhD student is free to work for hours as long as possible.

Travel:

While you’re staying and studying in New Zealand you might want to travel to other countries. During such situations a visa with multiple entry travel must be issued. If not, the visa is liable to expire once you leave New Zealand.

COVID-19 Updates and Information for New Zealand Study Visa

On 24th March 2020 the Prime Minister of, together with the Minister of Immigration and Minister for Social Development, issued Epidemic Preparedness (Epidemic Management- COVID-19) Notice 2020.

This Epidemic Preparedness Notice enabled the Epidemic Management Notice relating to immigration matters to be issued, which states how particular sections of the Immigration Act 2009 will be invoked to manage the relevant practical effects of COVID-19.

Under the Epidemic Management Notice issued on 2nd April, people who hold a temporary entry class visa like New Zealand Student Visa that expires between 2nd April 2020 and 9th July 2020 inclusive will automatically have their visa extended to 25th September 2020.

Temporary entry class visas include:
·         Work Visas
·         Student Visas
·         Visitor Visas
·         Limited Visas
·         Interim Visas
Except for the extension which will happen automatically, all visa conditions will remain the same and must be complied with.
Temporary visa holders whose visa expires on or before 1 April 2020 but who cannot leave NZ should reapply on line for a visa in the usual way. It is likely that an interim visa will be issued.
This extension does not apply to residence visa holders.

Visa holders that are concerned they may not be able to comply with the conditions of their visa due to the effects of Covid-19 should contact Immigration New Zealand by phone or email to discuss their particular circumstances.

Relaxation of certain visa restrictions for supermarket workers
From 25 March 2020 to 25 April 2020 (inclusive) the definition of “work” has been amended in a very specific way. The result of this temporary amendment means the following restrictions will be relaxed for certain visa holders who are currently working in supermarkets:
  • Work visa holders will be able to work in roles other than specified on their visa; and
  • Student visa holders will be able to work more than 20 hours per week.
For these purposes, ‘supermarket’ is defined as a retailer selling food and groceries affiliated with Woolworths New Zealand Limited, Foodstuffs North Island Limited or Foodstuffs South Island Limited.
Make sure you fulfill all the New Zealand student visa requirements irrespective of whichever Visa you fit into and also after COVID-19 situation. The requirements might increase in terms of Health Inspection as a precautionary measure.
